State Dental Schemes

Most Irish/EU adults are entitled to a free dental check up each calendar year.

There are two schemes in operation in Ireland.

PRSI

If you are an employee or self employed and are paying PRSI contributions you can check if you are covered for a free dental and oral health examination and subsidised periodontal treatment using the Social welfare website here or giving us a ring on 0578662111 and we can check on line for you. There is more information on this scheme here.

The scheme has been expanded to cover the self employed since March 27th 2017. We will still need to check if you are qualified for the treatment, you must provide your PPS number when booking your appointment. Since November 2017 we have access to a secure Welfare Partners portal where they advise us of your eligibility. If there are any queries regarding your application they will notify you in writing and advise us that your query is pending. Unfortunately this online verification facility is not available to dependent spouses. Application for dental benefit for spouses must be done manually by completing the DE2 form which can be collected from the surgery or ordered from the department phone line 0749164480 or email treatmentenquiries@welfare.ie.

Tax relief

Only certain dental treatments are allowable for tax relief. More details can be found on the Revenue website here

If you have any queries, please feel free to give us a call on 057 8662111 and we will try and answer your query.

GMS Medical Card Scheme

Unfortunately we no longer offer treatment under the Medical card scheme. Despite ongoing attempts by our representative body to engage with the last few Governments, over many years, we have had no engagement in modernising the scheme to meet patient's oral  health needs. The scheme does not put you, the patient, at the forefront of care, this contravenes our practice philosophy. We are happy to continue to treat medical card holders privately and under the PRSI scheme. An emergency dental service for medical card holders in Laois can be contacted on (057) 869 2625.
