Dental Benefit Scheme PPS

PRSI or Dental Benefit Scheme

social-welfareThis scheme, funded by your PRSI contributions, offers patients a full dental examination and €42 contribution towards either a scale and polish or periodontic treatment, reimbursed directly to the dentist by the Dept. of Social Welfare. This scheme has been extended to the self employed as of March 27th 2017. The government has suspended the remainder of the scheme benefits since 1st January 2010.

To check if you are eligible for a free dental examination or periodontal treatment, you can call Churchview Dental Practice and we can check your eligibility for you, using the Departments online system. Alternatively you can call 1890400400, extension 44480 and ask for the Dental Benefit Section, you will need to provide the operator with your PPS number. There are some exceptions to the length of payment rules for back to work spouses and students; so it’s always worth a call to the department to ask. Details of requirements can be found here, even part time work can be eligible which is useful for some college students.

Please note that if you are qualified for benefit, then your non-earning spouse is also eligible. Due to data protection issues it is no longer possible for us to check for benefit of dependent spouses. The Department require a DE 2 form signed by both parties. This must be sent to the department prior to any appointment at which you wish to receive treatment under the PPS scheme. It is not possible to retrospectively apply for treatment already carried out. The form is available at the practice, unfortunately it is not possible to make a copy, the form must be an original. You and your partner/spouse must complete the form and send to:

Once we have confirmation of your qualification for dental benefit, via our online query or via the application process for dependant spouses you may book an appointment for treatment under the PPS system. The dentist then claims directly with the department for your examination fee and the balance of the payment for periodontic treatment.

We recommend patients avail of this free check up annually, it is essential that your mouth is examined regularly, not only for your dental health, but for your oral health. As part of your routine check up the dentist checks the tissues in your mouth and lips for cancerous or precancerous growths. It is essential that these are detected as early as possible for a positive outcome.
