Sedation-What is it?
Dental sedation is the use of prescribed drugs to provide a relaxing and anxiety-free dental experience. It enables individuals too afraid to go to the dentist to receive the dental care they need while avoiding the common apprehension or fear known as dental phobia.
At Churchview Dental Practice, we are able to offer treatment under conscious sedation. We use midazolam sedation by IV (intravenous) or for some patients’ Nitrous oxide is enough to conquer their fears.
Sedation –Why?
About 30% of the population avoids the dentist, due to their fears or anxieties. If you are fearful, then sedation could enable you to achieve full oral health without this fear or anxiety.
Sedation can also be useful for you if you have a severe gag reflex and are unable to have treatment towards the back of your mouth under normal conditions.
Sedation-How?
Sedation with midazolam (I.V), involves the dentist administering the drug via a small needle into the back of your hand. The drug is slowly administered and your reactions are monitored by the dentist to ensure the correct dosage is applied. A small monitoring instrument is clipped to your finger. This enables your breathing and pulse rate to be monitored during and for some time after treatment. The medication begins to work very quickly, dental treatment then starts as normal.
Nitrous oxide sedation involves a small mask fitted over your nose, the gas is inhaled and the relaxing effect of the gas takes effect. Dental treatment then continues as normal. The patient must continue to inhale the gas throughout the procedure.
