Periodontist -specialist

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures.

If you have been referred to the periodontist you will probably have been told you have periodontal or gum disease. This is a progressive disease which attacks the gums and bone around the teeth. If left untreated the bone around each tooth is eaten away by bacteria leaving the teeth loose and only held in place by the gum tissues. Eventually otherwise healthy teeth develop periodontal abscess and become painful as the bone level (or foundations of the teeth) is reduced.

Periodontal disease can occur at any age and can effect anyone, it is said that about 80% of Irish adults have some level of periodontal disease. Most people manage their periodontal health by regular brushing, flossing and visits to the hygienist, however those people that have been diagnosed with progressive periodontal disease will need to visit a specialist Periodontist who will formulate a treatment and maintenance plan for you to help arrest the progress of your periodontal disease.

Our in house Periodontist, Dr John Crotty, visits Churchview Dental Practice each month and will be happy to take referrals. Please contact the team at Churchview Dental Practice to book your appointment.
